Afasia: When 18-year-olds don’t keep quiet and turn their fears

and dreams for a world that is falling apart into…songs. 

Afasia was formed in 2023 by students at the Music School of Athens. Since then, they have quickly established a strong presence on the city’s youth scene through live performances and their participation in Schoolwave. Following the release of the singles “Unbalanced” and “Dystopia,” the five-member alternative indie rock band now officially introduces itself to the music scene with a maturity and authenticity that are surprising for a group whose members are only 18 years old.

On February 20, Puzzlemusik will release their debut album, We Will Die Dreaming, which will be presented live for the first time at a special concert celebration on Sunday, March 1, at ILION Plus (17 Kodrigtonos Street, Athens).

It includes 8 songs and 2 instrumentals, all composed by the band members.

The contrast between the need for dreams and the fear of adult life in a fragmented world that is falling apart seems to be the emotional core of the album, which makes it honest and direct; an authentic voice of the new generation, the so-called Gen Z.

The opening track, “Unbalanced”, is an emotionally charged song that navigates the path between willpower and resignation. The inventive saxophone melody draws you in from the start, accompanied by unexpected rhythmic tricks.

“Dystopia” is based on the first bars of J.S. Bach’s “Prelude and Fugue: No. 16 in G minor, BWV 861″ which are heard in the piano introduction before the unexpected twist that leads to areas where the classical form is transformed into a landscape full of tension.

“Omorfa” is a contemporary lament in 7/4 time, mourning children — girls who grow up in an abusive society that is indifferent to protecting its members or punishing its abusers. Meanwhile, the chorus of “Dreamers” — a song whose lyrics alternate between English and Greek — features the line “We Will Die Dreaming,” which also gives the album its title.

However, Afasia’s debut is undeniably an album that works as a whole, which makes it difficult to single out specific tracks. All ten songs have something to say; they speak to listeners of all ages, and each of us can discover the one that moves us most.

Created by a group of young people on the cusp of adulthood, the album is fittingly released just as the members of Afasia themselves come of age.

“We Will Die Dreaming” will be released on streaming platforms on Friday, February 20 (Link for streaming platforms: https://album.link/Afasia-debut-album) and on CD at participating record stores on March 3, while it will be presented live for the first time in its entirety on Sunday, March 1 at ILION Plus (17 Kodrigtonos Street, Athens) in a concert-celebration. The opening act is Citrus Dust, the university students country/folk rock duo from Athens, which has also made some significant concert appearances recently.
