Christos Alexopoulos – Parallages Vita
The digital EP “Parallages Vita” (“Vita Variations”) has just been released, featuring outtakes form the 2001 Christos Alexopoulos album “Parallages sto Mono Thema” (“Variations on the one and only theme”)
The EP contains six tracks (four songs and two instrumentals). They are taken from the recordings of Christos Alexopoulos’s second album at the time, “Variations on the one and only theme” (2001). The album was reissued for the first time in digital format last April by Puzzlemusik. That is, 25 years after its initial CD release by the legendary Hitch-Hyke Records. Now, the archival recordings that make up the content of the “Variations Beta” EP are also being released.
“Vita Variations” includes:
Tracks 1 & 2: “I Won’t Say” and “You Don’t EvenWant to Know Me” respectively. Songs that we encounter here in acoustic versions, significantly different in their orchestration from the first versions that appeared on the “Variations on the one and only theme” album.
Track 3: “Variation Vita”. An instrumental composition that was created and recorded on the sidelines of the sessions for the album “Variations on the one and only theme” and was never included on it. The EP features the 2000 original mix. Another mix of the track was used many years later in the STAR mystery TV series “Mavroi Pinakes” and was released (under the title “Parallagi Vita” ) on the digital EP “Mavroi Pinakes EP06: The Red EP (Original TV Soundtrack)” released by Puzzlemusik in the fall of 2024.
Track 4: A girl from the hive (Dark Entry Mix)
Here, the song performed by Konstantinos Markoulakis and Tina Alexopoulou takes on a particularly dark tone with this Dark Entry mix —one might even call it sinister or ominous —leaving a very different impression from that of the 2001 album on which the song first appeared.
Track 5: You burned your martis” (acoustic version)
Despite its title, this version isn’t exactly acoustic. It is more of a simpler, stripped-down mix of the song, from which several of the instrumental layers present in the version that was ultimately included on the album have been removed. Fan Fact 1: For years after the release of “Variations on the one and only theme” album, Christos wondered if he had chosen the right one of the two mixes. Fan Fact 2: The word “martis” in the title does not refer to the month of the same name (“March” in English), but to the Greek custom of wearing a red-and-white thread as a bracelet on March 1st. The same word is used both for the month, and the thread in Greek. Of course, whichever way you look at it (thread or month), you’ll be right. Both interpretations hold true and were part of Christos’s intentions when he wrote the lyrics.
Track 6: What If Not (reprise)
On the “Vita Variatios” EP, this song “loses” its lyrics. Furthermore, its duration is shortened, and it is presented with a more minimalist arrangement that highlights the expressive playing of Dimitris Fronimos (French horn) and Socos (guitar).
The tracks on the EP “Vita Variations” are being released for the first time and are now available on streaming platforms: Spotify, Apple/iTunes, YouTube Music, Deezer, Tidal, and others.
